Eating the Whole Thing
Escape of Insanity and Physical Disease Without the Help of Medicine
An in depth look and true Hollywood story
It was yet another day. Rain was busy running around doing absolutely nothing of any monetary significance. Years of listening to inspirational speakers and reading from the greatest minds she could stumble upon. She lived in Hollywood, but dressed like a house wife living in Kansas City. She frequented the same health food stores and markets as the entertainment industry workers; including, famous Hollywood celebrities as she ran her day to day errands. Overall, she created for herself an existence of discontented leisure. But often times, caught up in the spirit of it all – specialty foods, long bus rides, four hour gym visits; the sauna, the steam room, a VIP dressing room, she thoroughly enjoyed herself. She managed to get by like this day after day, dispite the foggy, but linguering question: where was she taking her life. After a few years of drifting, finally the question was crystal clear and stared her accusingly in the face.
Somehow she ended up like her late psychologist/psychiatrist, Dr. Dolum, feared she would. But maybe not exactly, she’d say. She laughed when he said it. “I’d hate to see you sitting at the window looking out.” That’s where he believed a disability pass would lead her. He thought she should fight to save herself. He had psychotropic drugs to help her. But, she’d heard too much about the effects of those, besides she was on a “special journey.”
This kind of talk was foolishness to him. He thought new age thought and certain rules in natural healing were hog wash. She leaned toward eastern philosophies and alternative to mainstream -everything.
Further proof! Yes, these were effects of her illness, in his eyes. Even though she was misguided, he thought. She had her own ideas about what her problem was. Yes, misguided, but still, Dolum thought she was unusually bright and could be saved with possibly, lithium. Because the brain had been damaged, he said. Post Traumatic Stress disorder, plus acute Dissociative disorder and Anxiety.
In the following months, trips to an array of medical doctors, test and disease diagnoses followed. At last something tangible to work with, and not just insecurity; measurable things had gone wrong in her body.
When Dr. Dolum had given her the disability pass, it was because she was confused and couldn’t focus or string together enough words to make an intelligent sounding presentation in meetings at her professional job. She was a junior publicist, but she was toast and she knew she couldn’t keep up the facade much longer.
Denial, confusion, frustration, not knowing where she parked her car, put her keys, or even what she was going to say after opening her mouth to speak. Reluctantly she held on to her pay check and battling insecurity. But what she was really battling was an illness that she would have to face, head on and without pharmaceutical drugs.
Fast forward three years later and where was she? Yes, it was quite another day, but the question, where she was taking her life preceded one of the greatest messages she had heard. One night, a five hour listen to a special audio recording had inspired a twist in the plot, a missing piece of the abstract puzzle. All though the years on her own, away from the responsibility of going to work, had brought light to mysteries, wisdom, some marked improvement in her health. She’d lost enthusiasm, and drive. But a new level was arriving and things would forever change.
Talking inside her head, she joked, I’ll call it Sunset and Vine – a period in her life, the way she found herself, what she had become. When she considered that she’d grown up in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. She was a rich poor girl, she’d joke to others, A rich-poor girl who was escaping insanity and physical disability without the help of drugs.
